This blog is my love letter to the long-suffering love of my life, the wheaty Italian beauty that is pasta.
If you're like me, pasta is a staple in your diet. A survey carried out in 2011 claimed that pasta is now the world's most popular dish, with Italians eating a whopping 26kg of pasta per head, per year! There has been a nearly 10-fold rise in pasta sales in the UK in 30 years - from £53m in 1987 to £450m last year. I may be a contributing factor - I know I could eat pasta at least twice a day for the rest of my life. Spaghetti, penne, tagliatelle, macaroni, ravioli, linguine, fettuccine, the little butterfly-shaped one, the swirly one... The list goes on, but you get my drift. I cannot remember a time in my life when pasta and pesto was not my go-to comfort food. Pasta is there when I'm too tired to eat anything that takes more than 10 minutes and some boiling water to cook. Pasta is there at 3 am when the kebab shop is closed on the way home from a night out.
Although I mainly use pasta as a 'cheap and cheerful' dish (culinary gods everywhere are no doubt wagging fingers and swearing at this blasphemy), its versatility knows no bounds. I have - on occasion - been known to create sumptuous seafood dishes to try and impress a lucky lady. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Italian cooking ends rather abruptly after my world-famous garlic, chilli and prawn linguine. If like me, your ‘signature dish’ is, well, the only dish in your repertoire worth mentioning - you are better off taking your date to a restaurant. Let the professionals do the cooking; you’ll have to rely on good conversation and alcohol to impress them.
